And, getting closer

I’m almost done with the larger revisions related to M.L.’s suggestions, and it’s actually turning out a lot easier than I was making it *laugh*

I was looking at possibly adding or modifying several scenes, and it turns out that a paragraph here and a line there will actually get across what I left out.  If I’d had time before the deadline, I might have even caught some of it myself, but there’s a reason I have M.L. look over all these — I always miss a few things, and she always catches them.

Next step is fleshing out some of the scenes in the last third that I didn’t have as much time to read through and tweak before posting it in the contest.  Then, it will be adding bits of color to the world throughout.

After that, I’ll go into my full first-pass edit I usually do before sending a story out to first readers, let alone posting it.

Still sailing along

I did a lot of line tweaking last night, inserting little bits of the larger elements I needed to add to Beauty, but the larger section I wrote, telling about her inspiration to become a doctor, felt tacked on to where I had it.

Went back and read through things today, and ended up putting it back in with a few modifications much earlier in the story.  Really just have a couple more things to connect, and then there are some spots I wanted to polish&jazz a little that weren’t part of the first read.

Still aiming for the weekend for a completion of the new draft.  It’s going to clock in a little over 18k words.

Dashed off a quick essay last night about overzealous fans that I submitted to Lit.  It’s only 1200 words and just something I felt like writing, even though I’ve been trying to get the same point across on Lit’s forum for ages now.

Maybe with a wider net, it will actually catch up a few people.  It will go on the “Latest Releases” but I otherwise won’t announce it on the mailing list, or make much of a hubaboo about it.

Been musing the final chapter of Lowborn while I was at work.  I’m steadily tweaking it and hearing the characters talking in my head, so when I finish out the edit on Beauty, I should be ready to charge forward on it.  Ditto for SOTM 19.

Back to looking at a section where I think some of the missing pieces will fit in Beauty.

Beauty edit rolling along

Already addressed a couple of the more “duh” passages, which included at least one continuity error and one that gave the appearance of same.  Fixed a line of dialogue that was totally out of sync with someone having a doctor’s education.  Then, I started delving into the things that need to be in there to round out Dara’s character and her motivation.

I’ll probably deal with the typos and other grammar oddities as I go, then stomp the last of them in the first-pass edit of this draft.

My goal is to have this draft done before next weekend, then get it off to M.L. for her to review the changes.  Final tweaks should probably only take a day or two, at which point I’ll do the nuts-n-bolts clean-up, and send it off to Roust to sweep up anything I missed.

Then, I’ll finally be ready to post it at SOL and update the version at Lit.

Lowborn Ch. 08 Wrap.

Just finished chapter 8 of Lowborn, coming in at at little over 5800 words.  Finally will have everyone in place for the ending, which I hope to finish soon as well.

I’ll be relaxing for an hour or so, and then diving into the second draft of “Beauty of the Wood”.  It’s already long past Nude Day, so I’d really like to get that one pulled together and posted at SOL soon.

I’ll probably mix my time between Beauty, Lowborn 9, and SOTM 19 for the time being.

Passed the 4500 mark

Passed the 4500 word mark on Lowborn last night.  Before the young one decides to wake up this morning ( he was in a wild mood yesterday, which is why I didn’t get far ) I’m going to see how far I can get.  I would really like to finish this chapter today.

Still mulling around two ideas for the summer contest at Lit.  One is a potential Magic of the Wood, and the other is a taboo tale similar to Stocking Stuffer from Christmas.

Can’t remember whether I mentioned it here ( I know I posted something on Facebook ) but I also had a brainstorm on a Halloween story I abandoned last year.  I scribbled notes at work, which I transferred to the abandoned file when I got home.  Tale inspired by one of my old NPC back stories called “Suzanne” mixed with a few lines from Aerosmith’s “Flesh”, with which it shares a title.

I never know where my muse is going to go when she decides to pay me a visit.  That would be a rare contest story as Dark, if it comes together this year.

EDIT ( a little later )  Over 5300, and only the chapter transition scene to write.  Think I’ll make it today.  If I do, I’m going to knuckle down on the next draft of “Beauty” during any quiet time I have.
