One scene left

Well, half a scene.  I should be able to finish the first draft of Lowborn 06 today, and then I’ll let it simmer before reading back through, tweaking, and putting it in the hands of first readers.

Have to see where I go from there, but I’m leaning toward another short romantic piece with Thakkor and Alicia similar to King Thakkorias and Queen Alicia, but jumping back in time to a little while after they get married at the end of Merchant Princess.  It will be summer themed, and end up in the Lit Summer Lovin’ contest.

I won’t be eligible to win, because I won as Les with Secret of the Wood, but contests are always great for the exposure.  Besides, it will tweak the noses of the Triad of Ultimate Ego to put a story in the contest with characters that I’ve written before *laugh*

Still remains to be seen whether Lowborn will make it in at the seven chapter mark, or expand into eight.  Six is going to end before the penultimate action scene, and I think that the final bits of character development for some of the characters may very well fill up chapter seven.  Just have to see where it goes.

If it works out that way, it will leave Ch. 7 with the final battle, and the epilogue.

Not much tonight

I tried tinkering with Lowborn, SOTM, and a couple of stories in my third pen name, but I just wasn’t feeling anything.  Plot, humor, sex… nothing was flowing.

Just one of those nights, I guess.

I’m going to take one more peek at Lowborn and see if I can get it going, as it’s my top priority for the moment.  Guess we’ll see what happens.  It was early this evening when I last opened it, and sometimes that’s all it takes is a few hours.

Reworked

Finished the reworked scene of Lowborn.  I can already see the transition in my head, so this one should work out just fine.  Still trying to decide whether this is going to be a longer chapter ( since I’m only about 1000-1500 words off from the average length ) or whether I’m going to have this one be a cliffhanger.

The more I think about it, the more likely a cliffhanger is.  Whether that will mean that the story ends up being one chapter longer, I don’t know.  At the moment, I was aiming for seven chapters.

Speaking of likely, that “of the wood” story for summer is feeling more likely as well.  Ideas are percolating, actually taking me out of the wood to a new location, and centering on Xanmara ( Kia’s daughter )  That’s not the only potential deviation from previous stories in the series, though.  I’ll just have to see how it pans out, and if I want to run with it.

That idea of combining scenes in SOTM is congealing as well.  I’m trying to concentrate on finishing this chapter of Lowborn, but as you can see from all the musing in the last couple of posts, that’s hit and miss *laugh*  If SOTM is hitting me harder at some point, I’ll jump on it.

I’m thinking of putting out Lowborn on an every couple of days schedule, rather than back-to-back days.  I’ll probably submit the first chapter on a mid-day Sunday, aiming for Wednesday, then the next chapter on Tuesday, aiming for Friday, and repeat the process the following week.

With SOTM, when I relaunch it, I’m looking at a weekly schedule.  Those are longer chapters ( double Lowborn’s length ) so there’s more meat for longer breaks.  I’ll probably need the time to keep up, even with several chapters in reserve and ready to go.

I actually have the spark of a Thakkor and Alicia short summer story as well, and a longer tale to follow up on Merchant Princess.  Both of these would fall in the “History” side of the Nobles series, as opposed to the “Nobles” side.

I really want to start exploring Saggitariad and the other companions as well.  Sag’s tale has been taking shape for a while, as has Geflon’s.

Making Dwarf sex come across is going to be a challenge *laugh*

I want to make sure that everyone in the group has a nice back story before I launch into the tale of how they went from sellswords to the lords of Egoria.  One — Devan — already has her history in “The Arts Ardane”, and more will emerge over time.

So, beyond those already mentioned, only Darkniciad ( and a couple of female characters tied to the others ) remain.  It will still be quite a while before all the history is in place and I’m ready to launch another epic.  I want Danica’s tale either complete or nearly so before I delve into another story of that length anyhow.

Off for just a bit more writing before I crash out for the night.

A little rewriting

Think I know why I was having so much trouble with that transition in Lowborn.  I’m doing what I do quite often, and scrapping the whole scene I just wrote *laugh*

I like it — don’t get me wrong — but it just doesn’t advance the plot quickly enough, introduces characters that have just enough detail to make people wonder what happened to them when they drift out of the story shortly thereafter, and the aforementioned transition issue.

When I write, I just let my characters go.  Sometimes, they wander down roads of the trivial.  They always seem to meet and say interesting things along the way, but it just doesn’t take them toward a destination.

I’m working the rewrite now, hoping it will provide a smooth segue into the conclusion of this chapter so I can put it to bed and take a look at some of the other stalled stories/chapters of recent days.

Meanwhile, a couple of other things are steadily building in my head.  One, I believe I’ve mentioned before.  It’s a Halloween story inspired by Ghostbusters, going with my own mythos on ghosts and the business of paranormal investigation and elimination.  No proton packs, I’m afraid 😉

Another has been kicking around for a long time, but I’ve never really had a solid grasp on it until recently.  It’s a fembot story — but then again, it isn’t.  #1, it won’t be following the “rules” I’ve seen reference to quite often to this genre — mainly because I don’t know them *laugh*  Saying much more about this one would spoil too much ( assuming I get around to writing it )

I’ve had a lot of (pseudo) Science Fantasy kicking around in my head lately.  That may very well herald some multi-part stories as Les Lumens in the genre.  I’ve even had a couple of actual Science Fiction tales sparking.  I may very well have to take some time exploring some of these to get them out of my head.  I’ve had that problem before, too.  If I try to concentrate on something while my muse is poking me with something else, nothing gets done.

The more I think about it, the more likely it is that there will be an off-season “of the woods” story coming out.  First, there are some plot bunnies that don’t really fit the Earth Day theme, but still fit into the building story of the series.  Second, it’s a defiance of the Triad of Ultimate Ego and their rantings.  That bunch of numbskulls needs someone to flip them the bird, and I have every intention of doing so.

Could be a story in the Summer Lovin’ contest at Lit, though I’ve had more ideas for Winter Holiday.  If I have a really good spark for Summer, I’ll write it, but otherwise, I’m letting that Christmas idea percolate.  It will be interesting to explore the wood in Winter ( though the climate of the undisclosed location isn’t exactly prone to a “Winter Wonderland” )  If both ideas work, I’ll probably post them both.

The winter one, if it happens, would almost certainly be titled “Gift of the Wood”, and star Xanbrina ( Daughter of the Wood ) again.  Any stories in the series that I write between then and now will build up to this one, as it has a climax that I’ve been musing for quite some time now to reveal another bit of magic inherent to the family.

It’s possible that this one may even skip ahead, leaving a couple of stories between Secret and Gift that I’ll eventually write.  After all, I have Glen, Xanmara, and Xannera to explore.  I purposely inserted Daniel’s birth to narrow the timeline necessary to have new 18 yr. old characters to less than 18 years *laugh*  I would have had to start inserting Jetson cars in a couple of years at the pace I was moving through time.  Now, I can cut that in half.

Just a bit muse reporting, to show that all the missing days in the blog haven’t been completely unproductive.  Even when I don’t feel like writing, I’m often mulling over stories.

I think that what I’m going to do to get SOTM moving again is to actually combine the scene I’m writing now with one I had planned for later.  I’m going to introduce a minor chracter who will have an important place in the short run, and some cameo appearances later ( much like Heather and Carolyn ) and I think moving that introduction into the same scene with the one I’m writing now may be just the punch that is missing and leaving me stalled there.

The one thing I probably won’t be doing is entering the Nude Day contest.  That one is just completely uninspiring to me.  In order to be on theme, you almost must have public nudity and have it centered on Nude Day.  There’s simply very few ways to write anything believable within those boundaries — at least for me.

Okay, back to the Lowborn rewrite.  Just thought I’d put on “paper” some of the stuff that’s been going on behind the scenes with all the gaps in the blog.

Something neat

I wrote another couple of scenes for Lowborn, and I’m working on how to transition into the climax of the chapter now.  Slow going.  The long days at work and other things have my energy/motivation pretty low.

As for the neat little thing, I got an email today letting me know that something from my world is once again living in an active game, which is the genesis of my fantasy writing.  It’s not the first time that characters/items from my stories have found life within the imagination of gamers and game masters, and it always brings a smile to my face.

The Satchel of Hasty Departure that I created for “Danica” is the latest item to obtain that honor 😀  I’m pretty sure that this item was created specifically for the story, though there were several similar items in the game.  Something similar ma very well have been brainstormed at some point amongst the gaming group, but I don’t think it ever actually earned a place in the list of magic items.

The item is borrowed from Disney’s “The Sword in the Stone” *laugh*  The scene where Merlin packs up his house into a carpet bag.  I just eliminated the higgitus figgitus miggitus mum magical song and reduced it to a command word, putting the magic in the bag instead of the man.
