May have solved something

Looking into a couple of ready-made solutions for live editing of documents.  That could take care of the LST3K live riffing.  The link to reach it would appear on the Member CP  if the member had the LST3K riffer permissions set up.  Could also have a hidden section in the forum for discussing the riff with the same sort of permissions.

Should be simple to write the admin interface to update the website riffer permissions and forum permissions with one click.

Less coding = Good *laugh*

A second copy of the program that anybody could reach could also serve the U-Riff idea.

Okay, back to writing on Barren Harvest.  There will be a new deleted scene from this one, whenever I manage to get that page live.

Could simplify things

Took a break from Barren Harvest to do a little digging around on the ‘Net for website solutions.

Just installed a forum on the server ( no, it’s not linked and won’t be for a long time, most likely )

What I believe it will provide is obviously the forum ( which will probably get little use *laugh* ), and an easy, secure method of logging in.  The forum has built in functionality to provide login from pages outside of the forum itself.  That part is easily usable for logins that redirect to custom pages, and I can add to the scripts to create new functionality that makes use of the secure login and sessions.

That should allow me to create new settings to filter images and join mailing lists with immense customization from notification about all new postings, all the way down to notification about individual stories on one of the sites I post at.

Might finally get that group riffing editor together for LST3Ks, too.  Would be nice to have real-time riffing that doesn’t require emailing drafts back and forth.  I could have permissions for riffers that allow them to reach certain pages on the site to work on riffs.

Could even build that “U-Riff” thing I’ve thought about off and on that lets users riff on stories and off each other.

Don’t worry, I won’t spend all my time coding PHP — though the temptation to build an attack system into the forum is somewhat hard to resist *laugh*

As you can probably tell from the frequency of posting, I feel much more comfortable just blabbering on my own site than I do on SOL.  With WordPress providing an easy method to do it, I’ll probably update with some regular freqency now, even when I’m depressed and/or not writing.

We’ll see how it goes when I actually start serious coding.  I’ve only been dabbling so far.  Previews of serious coded pages will probably be images only, to avoid anyone seeing me making mistakes while updating code on the working pages.

Okay — back to Barren Harvest.  I’d really like to finish this one this weekend and get it in the queue.  Just a matter of my son cooperating with going to bed at a decent hour.

New Preview Page Up

If you look in the Preview Pages section of the Main Page, you’ll see an example of what a filtered page will look like.  You’ll be able to set this by creating a login for the site, or by going to a filter page, which will then carry the filtering through the rest of the site on the current visit.

The second solution isn’t perfect, but it will give people the option of filtering out images without creating a login to the site.  I know many don’t want to sign up for anything, regardless of privacy gurantees.

I’m absolutely going to go PHP for the whole website to allow the filtering options, and to create easy ways for me to update pages.  By setting up include files, I can eliminate a lot of redundant coding.  I can also dynamically update things like latest releases, latest news ( already working ), etc.  I’ll also be able to create an admin interface that will let me add new stuff to things like character pages, the pages listing my stories, etc.

I’m just fiddling around for now, because I need to dig up all my old PHP notes, documentation, and files off the old computer.

The current preview templates have a lot of “dummy” links and text on them.  They’re just something to fill up the layout while I decide how to organize the actual navigation and appearance of the site.

You know, this was a chore and a de-motivator for a while, but it’s become just the opposite now.  I’m enjoying the coding again, and that’s helping beat down a little bout of depression that hit me — triggered by knowing I was going to miss the deadline for the Halloween Contest at Lit on Barren Harvest, I think.

Now, to give writing on said story some time 🙂

Welcome to the new news page

I think I have this all set up the way I want it, so I’m going to link it up to the current index page.

All news about the website, what I’m writing, and everything else will now post here.

Ditched Feedburner and went with my own solution, because Feedburner was slow as hell.

Old Entries Complete

Whew — finished adding all the old entries to this blog.  Now, I need to make a couple more tweaks, and I’ll be ready to link it up.

I’ll add a new welcome post when this is fully linked up and ready to roll as the all-in-one news source for my writing.
