Gettin’ there

Gettin’ there, on several fronts.

Got some of the editing for SOTM 17 done. Got the beginning of Lowborn Ch. 08 mapped out, ready to start writing when I have some quiet time.

Mulling over two new story ideas in the Wood Universe, both of which I think I’ve at least mentioned previously. Have to see if I have time to do either of them. Also musing that Post-SOTM Nobles Next Generation story for Nude Day ( Starring Mindblind & Christi’s oldest son ), and that Sci-Fi idea as Les. Getting somewhere on pretty much all of them, and might actually be enough to get files started for them soon.

A story I’ve been writing with the intention to post in my third name may just end up migrating to Les. First, it’s way longer than anything I’ve written in my third name, and second, I’m coming up with a lot more plot that I want to explore than I usually do in that name. The more I write, the more likely I expect it to become a Les story.

Worked on the image side of the next website phase, the “My Worlds” section. That’s probably where the interest of most of y’all will fall after the actual story listings.

I’m probably going to go with a main page for the worlds that links to the detailed ones. It will be somewhat similar to the way the “My Work Extras” or “Legalese” pages function, with a group of links, though in the case of the “My Worlds” page, it will actually jump to new pages with identical navigation interfaces, because there will be too much content/php calculation to put all of it on a single page. If nothing else, for the sake of me being able to read it, if not for load times :p

Related to that, I’m getting the hang of the new mapping software, and getting into the advanced functions — where it really shines above most other similar fantasy mapping products. Do believe I got my money’s worth from this purchase, just as I did with the new content delivery system. Even if only a handful of people see what I’m adding to the website, the reference material I’ll be creating will be useful to me, and the sense of accomplishment helps keep me from getting in a funk when I’m not in the right mood to write. Me in a funk is a downward spiral process, and this is keeping it from happening 🙂

I posted a map of the environs of Xantina’s woods on the forum today, if you’re interested. I’ve actually improved that map since posting it by finally figuring out adding my own custom symbols to maps. Originally, the Tree Fort was just a standard tower. I’ve since created a custom symbol that more closely resembles a tree house. Likewise, I’ve replaced a couple of the fantasy/historical style houses with modern ones. I’m building a catalogue to replace the rest of them ( as well as some neat little things I might be able to use in later maps )

Figured out how to utilize the user-created symbol catalogues as well, and utilized one of them to create Melinda’s altar ( on the map posted on the forum, it’s just a filled polygon ) Also replaced Xannera’s tree with one that really stands out from the rest, utilizing a symbol I hadn’t noticed in the standard vegetation catalogue and its varicolor ability.

I had a “duh” moment with regards to zooming down into areas. I was trying to figure out the rather complicated method of cropping larger maps down to size, but there’s no real need for that. I can simply save large maps in new file names, zoom in, resize the symbols ( in bulk. One of the many nifty advanced features ) and work from there on a tighter view of areas.

I won’t be able to export the images, but screen capture should more than suffice, thanks to the ability to zoom in on a window of the screen that’s of customized dimensions. I can single out any area of the world, large or small.

Coming down from editing, I’m going to try to get some sleep, and see if I can’t make some reportable progress on SOTM 18 tomorrow.

Lowborn 07 done.

Just finished Lowborn 07 a minute ago. Finally found some quiet time to write.

I’m going to write the first bit of the final chapter, reboot the computer to finish some updates, and then see about beginning the editing on SOTM 17 to get it ready to post.

Starting to get the hang of the cartography software. Posted some preliminary images as I learn on the forum, if you’re interested in seeing them. For anyone who’s seen the original maps, some things have changed ( mainly to fit better with the actual stories, where I had to bend and twist some things as the places were on the original maps.

Some locations are still evolving even as I work on the mapping now.

Getting closer to finally releasing Lowborn. I’ve been working on this one for quite a while, and it will feel good to get it out there. Mindblind hasn’t got nearly enough screen time in my stories 🙂

Okay, I’m off. Probably shouldn’t get too deep into the editing, because the young one is asleep, and morning will come awful fast if I don’t get my hinder in bed.

Talk about a learning curve…

Messing around with that new software, and — damn — talk about a learning curve.  I’ve pretty much determined that the world generator is all but useless as far as importing the actual fractal world files it generates.  When you do that, you can’t access most of the more useful and pretty features of the mapmaking program.

Looks like the key is going to be saving the fractal world as a BMP, then adding it in as a layer, tracing the landmass with the tools ( so I have all the pretty functions ) then deleting the BMP layer and working from the traced landmasses.

Either that, or just draw the world from scratch using the generated world as a general guide.  I’m actually leaning that way, because I’ll have a lot more control to fix some irksome spots in the generated world.

Finally managed to at least make a resonable test map of the world tonight.  I’ve got a bit of a bad habit about obsessing on something I can’t get to work right *laugh*  Once I have some sort of small victory that points me in the direction I need to go, I can put it aside for a while.  That’s where I am now.

In the end, the downtime from writing will be worth it, I believe.  Not only will I have useful, pretty maps for my own reference, they’ll be available here for you to visualize the world as well.  Once I get the basics down, I should be able to crank out maps in fairly short order.

Then I’ve got to learn the next two scales of map making — towns and structures *laugh*  It looks to me like the overworld is going to be the hardest to learn, though.  As they all function off the same core, everything I learn as I go should apply to the next level down.

May have to get some additional symbol packs ( or find some made by other people, as you can import/create your own symbol catalogs ) in order to do some maps.  I’d really like to do the area around Xantina’s woods to have a good reference for that, but it looks like I’m going to need additional tools to have modern roads on an overland map, which is what I really need to properly visualize for those stories.

Anyway, the young one is wound up tighter than a frikkin’ spring tonight, and that’s going to limit writing opportunity.  If he winds down before I shut down, I’ll give it a shot.  I’d really like to get something wrapped up this weekend.

Took another plunge.

Well, I took another plunge with regards to adding/updating the content on the website.  After looking at and experimenting with demos for the programs for several years now, I decided to give ProFantasy professional mapping software a go.  14 day money back gurantee, so if it doesn’t do what I need, I’ve got that long to retreat, at least *laugh*

My Danica’s World overland maps were already based off one part of the suite — Fractal Terrains — which I’d downloaded the demo for and saved my world map file.  Once the demo ran out, I was just using screen capture to grab the sections I needed and working from there.

Playing around with updating the maps over the last couple of days, I simply wasn’t happy with the results.  That brought me back to ProFantasy’s page again.  After mulling it over all day, I finally went for it tonight.

I grabbed a bundle including Fractal Terrains ( world generation/editing ), Campaign Cartographer ( Overland Mapping ), City Designer ( City Level, which I’ve never posted, though I did create one of Montbank in simple bmp format for my own reference ), and Dungeon Designer ( Structure interior level )

Going to start out with the new version of Fractal Terrains and see what I can’t do about fixing one thing that’s always bothered me on my world map — the Great Crater.  It’s a major feature of my world, right in the middle of where most of my stories take place, and I was never happy with how it looked on the maps.  The new version is supposed to have specific crater generation.  Handy.  Hope it works well.

From there, I’m going to start with something simple and recreate one of Zoraster’s outposts in Dungeon Designer.  That’s a small structure that will let me learn the basics of the program.  Probably post an image in the forum when I’m finished.

Just a little note about what’s going on behind the scenes.  For now, I’m still downloading and installing everything ( HUGE files ) so I’m writing on Lowborn 07 during the hour long download sessions *laugh*

Getting ever closer to the conclusion of this chapter.  Once I finish it, I’ll get a basic start to Ch. 08 ( the ending ) and then move on to concentrating more on SOTM 18 ( as well as editing 17 for posting )

Then I have the long process of editing Lowborn.  I’ll have to read the whole story several times in order to make sure my continuity and everything is good.  Then, I’ll knuckled down on the nuts-n-bolts editing, chapter by chapter, and start sending them to Roust.  Once a couple of chapters have been completely edited, I’ll start posting the story.

Now, back to writing it 🙂

Lowborn 07 almost done

Coming up to the end of Ch. 07 of Lowborn.  I just took a quick break to do something before going back to it.  Hoping to finish this chapter tonight, so I can get rolling on the final chapter of the story.

What I paused to do was roll out phase II of the new website.  You can find the details on the new Web Updates page, accessed from the widget on the front page.

Let me know if the main page is loading too slowly with the new widget for recent web updates.  I’m going to do some speed tests and optimization all along the way during the course of restoring the website, so any opinions on the loading times are most welcome.

If it’s all good for you — good!

Also starting the editing process on SOTM Ch. 17.  It will probably be a bit yet, but it’s moving toward release.

Now, back to Lowborn.
